Workers at a Little Tokyo silk-screening business were busy Wednesday morning trying to salvage whatever they could, after a fire all but destroyed the one-story building.
The blaze in the 400 block of S. Hewitt St. broke out shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. According to Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales, it took some 120 firefighters about an hour to knock down the fire, which at times sent flames 75 feet into the night sky.
Leo Lee, the owner of CiX De¬sign, watched dejectedly Wednesday as some of his staff pulled out anything that could be saved — a fax machine, a couple of snowboards, a slightly singed bicycle — and wondered what he would do next.
“We’ve been open for about six years,” Lee said. “Business has been really slow lately, so I don’t know what I’m going to do from here.”
Lee added that the building is likely a total loss and that his business was not covered by fire insurance.
There were no reports of any injuries in the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation.
