Nothing typifies the Japanese American community spirit more than the obon dancing of summer. Young and old gather in a circle to honor those who have gone ahead — a joyous spectacle of color, music and motion.
When I drew this, I wanted to convey some of that joy. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the moves, what matters is to join in and have fun. This weekend, obon will be held at Gardena Buddhist Church and the Buddhist Temple of San Diego.
