Scooby dooby doo! The Japanese American National Museum will host a talk on the career of animator Iwao Takamoto this Sunday from 2 p.m. It’s great that Takamoto, the creator of Scooby Doo, is getting some much deserved recognition.
Scooby Doo is known worldwide, but to see Takamoto’s actual drawings of the famous floppy-eared dog was to see true artistry. Before his passing in 2007, he would donate original drawings to JANM for their silent auction at the annual gala, and I always marveled at the power and fluidity of his lines.
On Sunday his wife Barbara and Mike Mallory, who co-authored the book “Iwao Takamoto: My Life with a Thousand Characters,” will share remembrances of the Nisei animator. For more information, call (213) 625-0414 or visit www.janm.org.
