Toyo Miyatake Way will be dedicated at the Sakura Crossing on San Pedro between Second and Third street in Little Tokyo on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 11:30 a.m.
Miyatake Way is a small road that connects San Pedro and Los Angeles streets. The street dedication commemorates Miyatake’s work as a noted photographer who captured not only the Little Tokyo community, but also camp life in Manzanar.
Using a camera smuggled into camp, Miyatake chronicled the life of the internees in Manzanar. He also opened a highly successful photography and portrait studio in Little Tokyo in 1923. Toyo Miya-take Studio reopened after World War II and still operates today in San Gabriel Valley.
Miyatake family members will be present, as well as residents of the Little Tokyo community.
