Atsushi Uyehara, a Los Angeles County firefighter who was part of the team sent to Japan to assist in disaster relief, will speak about his experiences on Tuesday, March 29, at the Hiroshima Kenjinkai Building. 712 E. First St., Los Angeles.
Uyehara is a certified for search and rescue and hazardous material treatment. His team was sent to assist during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and earthquakes in Haiti, China and New Zealand. The Japan rescue mission was Uyehara’s first overseas mission.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department team arrived in northern Japan on March 12 and participated in search-and-rescue missions in Ofunato and Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture. The 74-member team returned to Los Angeles on March 19.
Hiroshima Kenjinkai recently decided to donate $30,000 cash to Japan earthquake relief.
