A new business catering to UCLA students, Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Gourmet Takeout, has prompted a protest from a state legislator.
Assemblymember Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) sent a letter to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block on July 12, asking him to take “appropriate action.”
The name comes from an anti-Asian tirade posted on YouTube by Alexandra Wallace, a UCLA student at the time. While complaining about Asian students talking on their cell phones in the library, she imitated their speech by saying, “Oh! Ching chong ling long ting tong! Oh!”
The video was widely seen as particularly insensitive because Wallace expressed annoyance at students calling Japan to check on family members following the earthquake and tsunami. Facing a barrage of criticism, Wallace apologized and left UCLA.
“I write this letter to express serious concern over the recent actions by a select number of UCLA students,” Eng wrote. “It is my understanding that these students partnered with a local restaurant and established a delivery service by the name of Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Gourmet Takeout.
“California is home to a broad range of diverse communities. Acts of intolerance such as these are senseless and have a profoundly negative effect on the community as a whole.
“As a member of the California State Legislature and the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, I urge your office to look into this matter immediately and take appropriate action.”
The service’s website reads, “Welcome to Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Takeout, Westwood’s newest, sexiest, drop-dead delicious Asian-food delivery. We at The Palace Restaurant Seafood & Dim Sum … started CCLL Takeout in order to provide UCLA students/staff with quality, affordable Asian foods. We are the only Westwood delivery service with gourmet Chinese chefs who make your favorite Asian foods fresh-to-deliver for an authentic food experience.
“We believe that the best way to combat intolerance is through a positive cultural experience mixed in with a healthy serving of humor, and hope that after you try us, you too will feel that way.”
