Assemblymember Warren Furutani (D-South Los Angeles County), candidate for Los Angeles City Council District 15, announced July 26 that he has been endorsed by a member of Congress and by three important labor organizations.
Furutani is running for the seat vacated by Janice Hahn, who was elected to Congress.
Recent polling conducted for Furutani shows that he and former Councilmember Rudy Svorinich are statistically tied as the frontrunners for this seat, with the other candidates trailing. Furutani represents 30 percent of the council district as a member of the State Assembly and represented all of the district as a member of the Los Angeles Board of Education and the Los Angeles Community College Board. He was born in San Pedro and has lived in the district for over 15 years.
Joining the Furutani campaign are Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles); American Federation of Teachers, Local 1521 Staff Guild; Teamsters Joint Council 42; and Transportation Communications Union (TCU), Local 1315.
“Congressmember Waters is one of the most dedicated, passionate and effective voices in the United States Congress,” stated Furutani. “She has been an outstanding representative for neighborhoods in the 15th Council District and I look forward to working side by side with her to improve the quality of life in our community. I am truly honored to have her support.”
Reps. Mike Honda (D-San Jose), Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and Laura Richardson (D-Long Beach) have also endorsed Furutani.
Teamsters Joint Council 42 is the largest joint council in the nation. It is the parent body for 22 Teamsters locals and representing over 200,000 working and retired members in a wide variety of occupations and industries, including many workers in the Port of Los Angeles.
Transportation Communications Union Local 1315 represents workers at the Metropolitan Transit Authority and the AFT Local 1521 Staff Guild represents classified employees at the Los Angeles Community College District.
The week before, Furutani announced endorsements from AFT Faculty Guild Local 1521; CAPE Los Angeles; Laborers Local 507; Operating Engineers Local 12; Teamsters Local 911; United Industrial Workers SIU; United Steelworkers Local 675; and Ray Cordova, chair of South County Labor, AFL-CIO.
“I have always stood firm as a stalwart ally of California’s working men and women and I am honored to have their support in my campaign for City Council,” Furutani said.
Furutani’s backers also include Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Councilmember Paul Koretz, Board of Education President Monica Garcia, Community College Trustees Kelly Candaele and Steve Veres, State Controller John Chiang, Board of Equalization Chair John Horton, Assembly Speaker John Perez, and nine other members of the State Legislature.
