CARSON — Carson City Clerk Helen Kawagoe is still recovering from a stroke that she suffered on Sept. 18.
“According to her family, she is receiving specialized therapy at an acute care facility and regaining her strength,” Chief Deputy City Clerk Wanda Higaki told the Rafu Shimpo on Thursday. “They are still requesting no visitors or flowers.”
On Oct. 3, the city said on its website that Kawagoe was “responding to her therapy sessions at the rehab center, and her progress is encouraging.”
Kawagoe was first elected in 1974 and has been returned to office ever since. She was also president of the National JACL from 1996 to 2000, following Denny Yasuhara and preceding Floyd Mori.
The JACL said in a statement that it “extends its best wishes to Helen for a speedy recovery and hopes that she will soon be back to full health and vitality.”
