GARDENA — A charity event hosted by Mako Jazz and featuring pianist Ark Sano will be held on Saturday, June 27, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Happa Restaurant in the New Gardena Hotel, 1641 W. Redondo Beach Blvd. (between Western and Denker, across the street from Pacific Square) in Gardena.
Sano and guest musicians and singers will gather to create a fun jazz night, including free sake tasting, and support tsunami survivors in the Tohoku region. Admission is $10. All proceeds will be donated to a local non-profit organization in Japan by Fukushima Kenjinkai.
Sano started formal musical training at the age of 12 and came to the U.S. to study jazz. A finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, he graduated from Berklee College of Music summa cum laude. He is a regular pianist of Black/Note, which has recorded for Columbia and Impulse, and has appeared in famous jazz festivals such as North Sea, Monterey, Montreal and JVC.
In addition, he is the composer, conductor, arranger and music director of the Japan America Chamber Ensemble.
