Pacific Asia Museum Celebrates Debut of Japanese Art Gallery

To celebrate the debut of a new gallery devoted to Japanese art, Pacific Asia Museum is hosting a Festival of Japanese Art and Style, a month-long series of experiences designed to connect visitors to the rich variety of Japanese cultural traditions and art forms. Events are as follows:

Mori Sosen
Mori Sosen’s “Monkey Performing the Sambaso Dance” is among the works at Pacific Asia Museum’s new gallery of Japanese art.

Saturday, Sept. 9, 2 p.m.
Curator’s Tour of the New Japanese Gallery
As part of Pacific Asia Museum’s Festival of Japanese Art and Style, Meher McArthur, Pacific Asia Museum’s Curator of East Asian Art, will lead visitors through the new gallery and show how objects in our collection reflect the various aesthetics at play in Japanese culture. The program is included in museum admission, $7 general, $5 students/seniors.  Space is limited, RSVPs required.

Friday, Sept. 15, 7-9 p.m.
The Aesthetics of Japanese Food and Drink

A unique opportunity to spend an evening learning about the aesthetics of Japanese food presentation from Andy Matsuda, Founder and Chief Instructor of the Sushi Chef Institute, Little Tokyo. Meher McArthur will explain Japanese sake, or rice wine, and the aesthetics of sake drinking. Guests will enjoy a bento, a sampling of sushi, and a taste of several delicious sakes. RSVPsare required, and space is limited. Museum member tickets $25; non-members $35. 

Sunday, Sept. 17, 2-4 p.m.
Ikebana Flower Arranging Workshop with Eileen Rosenthal

Eileen Rosenthal of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana will lead a workshop introducing the basic principles and aesthetics of Japanese traditional flower arrangement. Students will make an arrangement which they can take home. Materials will be provided. Admission: $10 per person. Maximum of 20, RSVPs required.

Friday, Sept. 22, 7 p.m.
Japanese Film Screening with Introduction
Classic Japanese film "Tokyo Story" preceded by a talk with Scarlet Cheng. Admission: $5 per person.  Space is limited.

Saturday, Sept. 23, 1-4 p.m.
Free Family Festival of Japanese Art, Music and Food
Musical performances, art workshops and food tasting for a family audience. Highlights include a musical performance by well-known performer and composer, Masakazu Yoshizawa and Kokingumi, origami and kite-making workshopsand sushi-tasting. The program is free.

Free with museum admission.

Festival of the Autumn Moon - Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel

Pacific Asia Museum's annual benefit event includes dinner, dancing, and distinguished silent and live auctions featuring art objects, luxury trips, and many other wonderful items. For more information, call (626) 449-2742 ext. 28.
