The 30th annual Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival was held April 27 and 28 in Cupertino’s Memorial Park. The popular event, which features food, crafts, displays and demonstrations, celebrates Cupertino’s sister-city relationship with Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture. Entertainment included Watsonville Taiko (pictured), Japanese classical dance, and musical performances by children and adults.

People danced to everything from music of the ’60s to contemporary pop, reliving the days when they hung out at Deer Park, Parkview, Rodger Young and Surfrider Inn.

The 36th annual Nikkei Matsuri, San Jose Japantown’s cultural celebration, was held April 28. Entertainment on the outdoor stage included San Jose Taiko, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

The Torrance Sister City Association presented the 41st annual Bunka-Sai on April 20 and 21 at the Ken Miller Recreation Center in Torrance. The Japanese cultural festival benefits TSCA’s student exchange program. Entertainment included Japanese classical dance by Mai no Kai. Above,  3½-year-old Brooke Misao Tam makes her debut performing “Futatsu Futatsu” under the guidance of Bando Kohiro. The other instructors are Bando Hirosuzu and Bando Hiromiya.
