July 27-28— Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple’s Obon Festival will be held on the weekend of July 27 and 28. This celebration in honor of our ancestors is one of the highlights of the Little Tokyo community and this year promises to be another exciting event.
The main attraction is the colorful Bon Odori, the folk dancing associated with Obon where everyone, experienced or not, is invited to join in. For those interested in learning some of the dances, lessons are offered free-of-charge on Wednesday and Friday evenings in the temple social hall beginning at 7:00 pm.
In addition to the delicious lineup of food and drinks available, there are games for kids and adults to enjoy. There is also the ever-popular Farmers Market, the Flower and Plant Shop, and the Fujinkai Big Bargain Sale.
Performances by TAIKOPROJECT, Bombu Taiko, Kitsune Taiko and Happyfunsmile. In addition, classical Japanese dance will be provided by the popular Fujima Kansei Odori group. There will be singing/jazz/other performances including the Lumbini Kids on stage and Fujima Kansei Odori-Kai.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the temple office at 213-626-4200, access the website at www.hhbt-la.org or email to [email protected]
