About 10,000 people, some waving Mexican and American flags, took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles Tuesday and marched to City Hall to call for a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Turnout for the event was far lower than anticipated and a mere fraction of the throng that gathered last year for a massive immigration demonstration that clogged downtown streets. “All we are asking is for a clear path to become citizens,” said Jose Machuca, a 37-year-old janitor who immigrated to Los Angeles from El Salvador five years ago. Spanish music blasted from speakers mounted atop a truck and people chanted for immigration rights as the event took on a celebratory tone. Most participants wore white T-shirts and waved the Stars and Stripes more than any other national flag. Between 640 and 680 Los Angeles Unified School District students marched off campus to take part in the protest, according to the LAUSD’s Monica Carazo.
