March 12 — On Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle and its Sawtelle Gakuin language school students are having their Community Cherry Blossom Festival and Undokai (athletic festival) amidst the blooming cherry blossoms in Stoner Park, 1881 Stoner Ave., Los Angeles.
Recognized will be the several Sawtelle community seniors reaching 90 and 80 years of age. Los Angeles Councilmember Bill Rosendahl and Consul General of Japan Junichi Ihara are slated to greet the seniors and give congratulatory speeches in recognition of those who planted 100 cherry tree in the park the 1990s. There will also be a performance by the taiko group from West Los Angeles Buddhist Church.
Winding up the festivities will be the annual Sawtelle Gakuin Undokai (Field Day) events.
