Ai Carina Uemura


We were lucky to interview international Japanese pop sensation Ai Carina Uemura at her benefit concert—Ai Love LA. Ai is ¾ Japanese and ¼ Italian. She has amazing vocals which have been compared to Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. Ai’s sound is a mix of rock, pop and soul. She initially signed with BMG and now is with Def Jam Japan.

How long have you been singing for?

I’ve been singing for 8 almost years. In 1999, I finally got a record contract.

Where are you originally from?

I was born in Los Angeles and moved to Japan when I was 2. That’s why my English isn’t the best. I came back to la for school. I went to LA County High School for the Arts. I was in high school for 3 years.

How were you discovered?

When I graduated from high school, I joined a girl group. We started recording and making songs. Then, I went back to Japan for vacation and I was singing the song “For You I Will”, by Monica. Some guy was recording me singing and gave the tape to the record company and that was it. I signed with BMG.

I like to do anything, play music, I like to dance, I’ve been tapping since I was two. I used to do tap, jazz, modern ballet, African, Japanese.

What do you think of LA?

I love LA. I just came here yesterday, tomorrow we get to go to a mall because I like to shop. It’s sad but I’m leaving tomorrow.

favorite designers: I like Japanese brands, rodeo crown, slide, Moussy

favorite: soft cream and fried chicken

influences: Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Chaka Khan—anything my mom used to listen too.

What is a typical day in your life like?

I wake up and go to work and eat, come back home and go to sleep. I don’t go to clubs, I used to go out a lot. But now I work a lot so I don’t have time to. I don’t like to be hung over.

Do you have anything to say to your fans?

I hope they listen to my music. I write my own lyrics. I just want them to really listen to what I’m saying. Its not like I just wrote it.

How would you describe your music style?

When you hear it, if you think its rock or pop. I can’t really say. I do pop or rock. Music is just music, you can’t classify it.
