Saturday night marked the culmination of over a year of planning, hard work and dedication as Cal State, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) unveiled their new Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome to honor long-time head basketball coach Dave Yanai.
While there were countless people involved in the raising of over $250,000 to rename the court and establish the Dave Yanai scholarship fund, the co-chairs of the Yanai Tribute Committee deserve a special notice. They included: Henry Ota, Dan Guerrero, Sam Lagana and John Nojima. “We admire his dedication in teaching our players,” said Mildred Garcia, the president of CSUDH of coach Yanai. “Not only the value of playing basketball, but the value of integrity, team work, commitment on and off the court, community service and excellence in education. That’s what coach Yanai emulates for every single one of us.” Top: from left, Robert Hiegert, commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association; Patrick Guillen, Athletic Director of CSUDH; Garrett Yanai, Dave’s son; Dave; Sae Yanai, Dave’s wife; Deanne Herbers, Dave’s daughter; Keith Herbers, Dave’s son-in-law; and Mildred Garcia; Dave’s grandchildren, Ryan and Gavin also pictured.
