The Dale M. Inouye Memorial Basketball Tournament, that took place on July 31 and Aug. 1 at Cal State Dominguez Hills, successfully accomplished all it had initially set out to do in what is hopefully the first of many tournaments to come. There was great basketball, including a nail-biting overtime thriller in the seventh grade main court game on Sunday. There was the over $10,000 raised that will go to a variety of different cancer research organizations. And there was the continuance of Dale’s legacy, most exemplified in the four recipients of the Dale M. Inouye Inner Strength Award that went to one person in each of the divisions that demonstrated the same qualities—hard work, determination, courage, teamwork, sportsmanship—that Dale lived every day of his nine years. Garrett Cuadra, Brandon Teraishi, Max Okazaki and Dale’s older brother Derek Inouye were the recipients.
