City of Gardena officials and staff, the Gardena Sister City Association, as well as numerous citizens, schools, and businesses in our community have expressed deep concern about the devastation caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011. As we all know, the two disasters caused significant loss of life, billions of dollars of economic damage, and significantly compromised several nuclear power plants.
Therefore, in response to the many inquiries received and to facilitate our community’s wish to give much-needed assistance to Japan, the City of Gardena announces it will be accepting donations for Japan disaster relief and has the cooperation of Gardena’s sister city of Ichikawa, Japan, to coordinate the distribution of contributions the city receives for that purpose to the areas of greatest need within their country.
At this time the city is only accepting monetary donations. Please, no relief goods or supplies will be accepted. Donations by check should be made payable to “City of Gardena – Ichikawa” or “City of Gardena – Japan Disaster Relief,” and should be mailed c/o City of Gardena City Treasurer’s Office, Gardena City Hall, 1700 W. 162nd St., Gardena, CA 90247. Checks and cash donations may also be dropped off at the City Treasurer’s Office in Room 106 in City Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. every Friday.
The city will not provide a tax-deductible receipt for these donations as the funds collected are not within the IRS rules for tax deduction for charitable purposes because of the international nature of the giving. If anyone wishes to have a tax deduction for their charitable gift, please select other registered charitable organizations, such as the Red Cross, etc.
This disaster relief effort is an open-ended one. Donations will be accepted as long as there are needs.
