OAKLAND — “We Are One Island,” a Japan relief concert and auction, will be held Saturday, April 23, at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, 388 9th St., Suite 290 (second floor, Pacific Renaissance Plaza) in Oakland’s Chinatown.
Silent auction begins at 6 p.m., concert at 7 p.m.
Admission is $15 to $25, sliding scale. All ages welcome. Door prizes for full price and above.
100 percent of the proceeds will go directly towards the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (see www.jcccnc.org for details).
This evening of honoring, remembrance and hope, will be emceed by Kara Tsuboi, in-game host for the Oakland A’s. It will start with a traditional ceremony led by the Buddhist Church of Oakland, followed by a video slideshow of damage caused by last month’s earthquake and tsunami.
Offerings from the stage include performances by Marina Fukushima (Kunst-Stoff contemporary dance), Purple Moon Dance Project, Shirley Muramoto and Brian Wong (koto), Michael Sasaki (guitar), Maze Daiko, RyuQ Murasaki Daiko, Asian Crisis (percussion), Sushi Cal Band, Dirty Boots (indie rock), and hip-hop/spoken-word artist Colin “Senbei” Ehara.
The silent auction will feature selected, original works by many well-known folks from the Asian Pacific Islander arts community.
