The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center and Cinefamily will present the classic Japanese film series “Katsudo Shashin” (Moving Pictures) with a rare screening of “When a Woman Ascends the Stairs” at the Cinefamily Theatre. 611 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, on Tuesday, April 26, at 8 p.m.
Directed by the highly influential Mikio Naruse, the 1960 film features the recently deceased Hideko Takamine (1924-2010) as a successful but aging madam of a Tokyo hostess bar who realizes that she will soon have to retire. The cast also includes Masayuki Mori, Reiko Dan, Tatsuya Nakadai and Daisuke Kato.
Actress Yoko Sugi will be present to discuss her friendship with both Naruse and Takamine. Q&A will be conducted by Nicholas Rucka.
Admission is $10 general, $7 for JACCC members. The member discount price can only be obtained at the box office; bring your membership card.
Parking is available on the street and at Fairfax High School (if space permits).
