Cerritos Center’s Season Includes Keiko Matsui, Yamato

CERRITOS – The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA), 12700 Center Court Dr. South in Cerritos, has announced its lineup for the 2011-2012 season, which features the greatest entertainers in music, dance, Broadway, and comedy.

The Great Performers series includes keyboardist Keiko Matsui and saxophonist Kirk Whalum on Friday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $68, $55, $45, $35.

Matsui dazzled on Billboard’s jazz charts with the albums “Sapphire,” “Dream Walk” and “Deep Blue.” The Los Angeles Times calls her performance “precise and accurate, executed with … articulation.” She is a two-time Oasis Award winner for “Best Female Smooth Jazz Artist.”

Whalum, nominated 11 times for Grammys, has collaborated with Whitney Houston, Al Jarreau and Quincy Jones. He has won two Stellar Awards, gospel music’s highest honor. Smooth Jazz Times said his music has “an inspiration that can reach the depths of your soul.”

Yamato will perform on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $64, $54, $44.

Since its inception in 1993, Yamato has mesmerized more than 2 million fans with its mastery of taiko. The ensemble’s performances enforce its core belief — that the drumbeat (like the heartbeat) is the very pulse of life. In making wadaiko (Japanese drums) accessible to people of all ages, Yamato has “the power to put an audience on its feet, laughing, clapping and taking part,” said the London Times.

The series also includes Na Leo’s “A Hula Christmas” on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $75, $55, $40, $30.

The Family Programs series includes New Shanghai Circus on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. Tickets: $55, $45, $32; four or more for a single performance, $40/$35.

The Recital Series includes violinist Ray Chen on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $40.
