Three Southern California public radio stations — Southern California Public Radio KPCC 89.3-FM, KCRW 89.9-FM and KUSC 91.5-FM — will go on-air Friday through Sunday to raise money to support earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan by partnering with the California Community Foundation and the U.S.-Japan Council.
The fundraiser comes in response to a call from the Los Angeles community, including the large Japanese and Japanese American community, to support friends, family and colleagues in Japan.
Recognizing the important ties between Southern California and Japan, KPCC and its public broadcasting colleagues felt it was appropriate to lend their airwaves and websites in support of the relief and rebuilding efforts. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is also behind the fundraising initiative.
“The road to rebuilding is a long path, and we must continue to do everything we can to aid the people of Japan, especially in light of the recent aftershocks,” Villaraigosa said. “The City of Los Angeles is deeply connected to Japan and working with organizations like KPCC, we remain committed to raising funds and offering support for a strong and hopeful future.”
Aftershocks from the March 11 earthquake continue to jolt Japan, where 150,000 people remain homeless and thousands of others are still missing. Japan is facing an estimated $300 billion in damage, four times the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Even though the earthquake and tsunami were a month ago, the need for relief will be long-lasting. The greatest need is for cash donations, the most effective and efficient way to get relief to those in need.
The California Community Foundation (CCF) and the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) will collect and disburse all donations from the weekend to the Red Cross, the International Medical Corps, Save the Children and Japanese NGOs (non-governmental organizations). 100 percent of donations will go to these beneficiary organizations with no fees collected by USJC, CCF or the radio stations.
