TORRANCE — The Tigerettes Pride, a second-grade girls’ basketball team, has donated more than $7,000 to the Red Cross to go toward the disaster relief fund for victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Organized by their coaches, Tricia Saiki and Peggy Chin, this amazing group of 7- and 8-year-olds conducted a “free-thow-athon” in which each player requested and received pledges from friends, acquaintances and family members for each free throw made out of a possible 100 attempts.

When all was said and done, the girls collected $7,296.24. The presentation was made May 27 at the Red Cross’ South Bay office in Torrance.

The Tigerettes Pride consists of Aika Abrena, Brissa Castillo, Makani Kane, Hannah Landry, Katelyn Noonan, Mailia Sato, Jenaca Seki, Ty Tanino, Michelle Toyooka, and Kami Yamamura-Heyler.
