The Ching-Chong-Ling-Long delivery service has shut down temporarily after criticism of its name, the Daily Bruin reported July 25.
The gourmet takeout business was named by UCLA students Daniel Chen and Kedar Iyer in reference to former UCLA student Alexandra Wallace’s infamous anti-Asian YouTube video, in which she imitated Asian languages by saying, “Oh! Ching chong ling long ting tong. Oh!”
While the name was meant to be a humorous response and not an endorsement of Wallace’s views, Assemblymember Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) and UCLA’s Asian Pacific Coalition said that it would only perpetuate stereotypes and misunderstanding.
The delivery service was a partnership with The Palace Restaurant in Brentwood. Following the negative publicity, restaurant owner Rachel Lee asked the students to take down the site.
Chen told the Bruin that he may partner with another Chinese restaurant, but it must be willing to keep the name as is.
