GARDENA — The Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (JCI) is planning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Moneta Gakuen and is currently looking for alumni and materials from the school and its former students.
To help with the process, the JCI is hosting a “Collection Day” on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the JCI, located at 1964 W. 162nd St. (between Van Ness and Western) in Gardena. Former students and their family members are welcome to share historic documents, photos, and artifacts that will either be scanned or photographed on-site. Video interviewing of former students will also be conducted.
The Moneta Gakuen, founded in 1912, is the direct predecessor of the current JCI Language School and, in fact, provided the current property for the JCI.
Over the course of the century, other local schools came and went, including the Gardena and Compton language schools, which contributed to the JCI school.
