Police Warn of Fumigation Burglaries

Torrance police warned area residents Sept. 14 that burglars have been targeting homes and apartment buildings tented for fumigation.

Since July 1, there have been four such crimes in Torrance, at least nine in Gardena and at least a dozen in Inglewood, the Torrance Police Department reported. No descriptions were available of suspects or vehicles.

“So many fumigation companies have been used by the victims (that) it doesn’t seem likely they are involved in the burglaries,” a police statement said.

One company told police that burglars likely follow the fumigation trucks to locate potential targets.

“The suspects are wise to the fact that once the fans are placed in the homes to force out air, as required by federal law, not only are the homes accessible due to open doors and windows, but it is safe to make entry due to the chemicals being removed,” the statement said.

Among items taken were a flat-screen TV, a laptop computer, jewelry, and cash.

Anyone seeing suspicious activity around tented residences was urged to call police at (310) 328-3456.
