SAN MATEO — CSM Ethnic Studies presents the fifth annual Asian Pacific American Film Festival starting this weekend. The schedule is as follows:
• Saturday, May 3, at College of San Mateo’s Main Theatre (Building 3). $5 donation. Free parking in Beethoven Lot 3.
1 to 4 p.m.: “Linsanity” (2012), directed by Evan Jackson Leong. A moving and inspirational story about the rise of NBA star Jeremy Lin. Before the screening, there will be a performance by Hui ‘Ohana o CSM with CSM Professor Kate Motoyama. Post-show Q&A with producer Christopher C. Chen. Guest facilitator: Simi Lee, former San Mateo Times sportswriter.
7 to 10 p.m.: “Harana” (2012), directed by Benito Bautista. Local Bay Area guitarist Florante Aguilar traveled to the Philippines to (re)discover the disappearing Filipino musical culture of harana (serenades) and the voices of master haranistas. Opening performance with guitarist Florante Aguilar and singer Danny “Harana” Bulandi. Post-show Q&A with executive producers Fides Enriquez and Florante Aguilar. Facilitator: CSM Professor Lisa Suguitan Melnick.
• Wednesday, May 7, from 12 to 2 p.m. at College Center Building 10, Room 194.
“Seeking Asian Female” (2012), directed by Debbie Lum. This love story follows Steven and Jianhua (“Sandy”) — an aging white man with “yellow fever” and the young Chinese woman he finds online. Post-show Q&A with the director; Finasina “Fi” Tovo, CSM Admissions and Records; Tami Hom, CSM Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) program services coordinator; Maria Segarra, staff attorney for Asian Pacific Islanders Legal Outreach (APILO) and coordinator of the domestic violence restraining order clinics in northern San Mateo County.
