aiko-herzig-receptionFormer Assemblymember Warren Furutani and his family took time off from his State Senate campaign to attend a reception for the Jack and Aiko Herzig Papers on Oct. 26 at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga (Furutani’s mother-in-law) and her late husband John “Jack” Herzig developed a repository of documents relating to the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans that proved invaluable during the redress movement and related court cases of the 1980s. Their papers have been bequeathed to UCLA AASC. Herzig-Yoshinaga is pictured in the front row (second from left) with her daughters Lisa Abe Furutani (left) and Gerrie Miyazaki (second from right), and Martha Nakagawa of UCLA AASC’s Suyama Project. Standing, from left: Professor Valerie Matsumoto, Marjorie Lee, Barbara Takei, Garrett Griffin (partly obscured), Professor David Yoo, Karen Ishizuka, Joey Furutani, L.T. Miyazaki, Sei Furutani, Warren Furutani, Hideki Obayashi, Judy Tachibana, Melany de la Cruz-Viesca, and Linda Ta. Takei and Tachibana came from Sacramento to attend. (Photo by MARIO G.
