Feb. 20-21 — Gardena Cymbidium Club’s 23rd annual Cymbidium Orchid Show will be held at the Nakaoka Memorial Community Center, 1670 W. 162nd St., Gardena, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21. Public plant sales begin on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Display of orchids will open to the public at noon. The show will be open on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission.
Over 300 hybridized Cymbidium plants, grown primarily by club members, will be on exhibit. The show is annually sponsored by the Gardena Cymbidium Club in cooperation with the City of Gardena’s Recreation Division.
Displayed plants will be judged in the Open Class and trophies will be awarded in six sections, including the best in standard, miniature/novelty, and pendulous Cymbidium orchids. The Cymbidium Society of America judges will also be present to award plants of exceptional merit.
Dividing and potting demonstrations of Cymbidium plants will be held in the auditorium in English and Japanese in Room C on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Gardena Cymbidium Club was originally formed in 1985 by a group of Cymbidium enthusiasts to perpetuate the cultivation and presentation of Cymbidium orchids. The Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Nakaoka Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Meetings consist of lectures on the care of plants (in Japanese and English), plant raffles, and orchid exhibits. Refreshments are served.
