A Memorial Service for the late Mrs. May Minami, a 96-year-old
Oxnard, Calif.-born Nisei resident of Gardena who passed away on June
8 will be held Wednesday, June 16, 10 a.m., at Gardena Valley Baptist
Church, 1630 W. 158th Street, Gardena, CA 90247-3712, officiated by
Rev. Sam Tonomura.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations
be sent to The Jaret Minami Memorial Scholarship Fund established at
CSU Dominguez Hills, c/o Neil Minami, 19814 Redbeam Ave., Torrance,
CA 90503, or to Gardena Valley Baptist Church at the above address.
Born on January 26, 1914, Mrs. Minami lived in Gardena nearly her
entire life except for 3 years of imprisonment in Rohwer, Arkansas,
as a result of discriminatory orders aimed at Japanese Americans
during World War II. Mrs. Minami, with her husband, Sam, for many
years operated Sam’s Sporting Goods on Gardena Blvd.
She had many friends and family who loved her grace, compassion,
strength, generosity and sense of humor. May is predeceased by her
beloved husband, Sam, and cherished grandson, JT. She is survived by
her sons, Roland, Neil and Dale; daughters-in-law, June, Bobbie and
Ai; and grandchildren, Krista, Brian, (granddaughter-in-law) Miki,
Lanie and Ellie. She will be missed.
