Shizuo Ben Yamanaka, 92, of Los Angeles died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 14, 2012. He was born on July 22, 1919 in Rocky Ford, Colorado but spent most of his life in West Los Angeles. He graduated from University High School and later owned and operated Ben’s Jewelry store on Sawtelle Boulevard for 30 years. He served as a medic in the 442nd

RCT and recently received the Congressional Gold Medal presented to the WWII Nisei veterans. Ben is survived by his wife and love of his life Hisako, daughter Gail, brother Ted (Sayoko) Yamanaka, sister-in-law Mariko Shiraga, and nieces and nephews. He is also pre-deceased by his son, Gregory.
A service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 11:00 a.m. at the West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple, 2003 Corinth Ave., 90025.
The family requests casual attire.
