Sumio Matsuda

Sumio Matsuda, born and resident of Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2011 at the age of 82. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, 11 a.m. at Fukui Mortuary “Chapel in the Garden,” 707 E. Temple St. Los Angeles, with Rev. Dwayne E. Nordstrom officiating.
Sumio received his undergraduate degree in English literature from Roosevelt College in Chicago. He went on to pursue further studies in English literature, receiving a Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago and a Doctorate from the University of Southern California.
He served his country in United States Army and was stationed in both Korea and Japan. It was during his enlistment that he met his future wife, Ayako.
Upon his return to Los Angeles, he embarked on a teaching career that included positions at Wilmington Junior High School, Dorsey High School, and East Los Angeles College.
As a published poet, his work has appeared numerous times in Epos, Ann Arbor Review, Bitterroot Quarterly, L.A. Poetry, and the Georgia Review.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ayako Mary Matsuda; sons, Jack and Robert Jiro Matsuda; his brother, Don Matsuda of Hawaii and also, survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives in California, Iowa, Hawaii and Japan.
