Tokuji Iwai

Tokuji T. Iwai, age 85, owner of the former Mikado Restaurant and
grocery, died on Aug. 4 in Rockville, MD, of cancer.
Mr. Iwai was executive chef at the Japanese Embassy from 1957 to
1963, serving under Ambassador K. Asakai. Mr. Iwai emigrated to the
United States after his retirement from the Japanese Foreign
Ministry. In partnership with his U.S. sponsor, Sakaye Kinoshita, he
opened a Japanese grocery and deli, the Mikado, in 1972, in
Washington, D.C. In 1963, Mr. Iwai became a U.S. citizen.
His wife, Tetsuko Moriguchi Iwai, passed away on Aug. 4, 2001. They
had no children. He is survived by brothers Masanobu and Kiyoshi
Iwai, both of Tokyo; three nieces and one nephew, all of Japan.
Funeral service will be held in Japan. In his memory, donations to
Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Dr., Rockville, MD 20850, is preferred.
