June 18 — Tanaka Farms and the Orange Coast Optimist Club are co-sponsoring, “Walk the Farm” fundraiser to benefit Japanese farmers on June 18, from 9 am to 2 pm, at Tanaka Farms, 5380 3/4 University Dr., Irvine.
According to the Associated Press reported date March 26, “The rice paddies on the outskirts of this tsunami-hit city (Sendai, Japan) are ankle-deep in a black, salty sludge. Crumpled cars and uprooted trees lie scattered across them.” Even fishing boats were pushed in land and onto on farmland. Many farmers whose families have been farming for generations have had their homes destroyed and some family members have not been found.
The money collected from the “Walk the Farm” will be used to help the Japan farmers whose lives have been drastically alter but not their spirit. Tanaka Farms and OCO encourage families and friends to “Walk the Farm” or to become a sponsor. The featured active is a one and one-half mile self guided walk around the 25-acre farm. Along the route there will be several sponsor tents providing samples of fresh grown produce. This event, although fun and educational in nature, has a much deeper meaning.
